Shuumatsu no Valkyrie: Record of Ragnarok|Volume 01 Review!|Thor vs Lu Bu! Quenching their boredom!

A battle between Gods and Humans. The Gjallahorn has been blown to signal the Ragnarok. The Rebellion of the Valkyries. Divine Weapons.

We are just through with one volume and it gave us a lot of background of what is exactly happening with this battle manga. The tournament has started, and for the first round we got the bruisers right off the bat.

For humanity’s vanguard, Ryofu Housen (Lubu) the Strongest Man in China! And for the gods’ vanguard, Thor the Thunder God! An intense fight between blood knights, both stricken with boredom in their lifetime. Seeking to appease their desire to be thrilled after a long time, both of the fighters didn’t waste any time with mind games and just fought each other head on.

You might think that easy win for the gods because they are basically gods, so what could a mere human do? Truth is humans can’t fight toe to toe with a god on their own. The reason is due to the gods’ Divine Weapons, basically cheat weapons meant to give gods additional firepower. So, to even the odds a Divine Weapon is needed by the humans in order to somehow be given a fair chance in the fight.

I was actually thinking when I read this is, ‘maybe, just maybe a god is willing to help out humans. Maybe the god of forge Hephaestus, because it makes sense, he was cast out by the gods due to his looks and was given task to just forge weapons for the gods. But NO, boy I was wrong. Apparently, the Valkyries can transform into human weapons and along with their attributes, they become Divine Weapons. And this process is called Volund, a Valkyrie becomes a weapon for a human in exchange of the human’s very being to the Valkyrie.

In this volume, it was revealed that there was a rumor that seems to be true, spreading during the ancient times that the Valkyries were not collecting humans’ finest warriors for the gods, but to fight the gods in Ragnarok. A plot that thrilled Zeus after the ‘Big Bang’.

There are 13 Valkyrie sisters (counting both Brunhild and Geir), and there are 13 humans. Now that we know about the Volund, we can for sure say that one Valkyrie for each human contender. In this round, Lu Bu’s weapon Sky Piercer is the actually the Valkyrie Randgriz, and the attribute received by the weapon based on Randgriz name is the Shieldbreaker. The weapon became so powerful enough to destroy Heaven’s Strongest Garment, Jarngreipr (The pair of gloves worn by Thor).

Unbeknownst to most, the legend of Thor using the Jarngreipr to protect himself from the drawback of using Mjolnir, Heaven’s Strongest Divine Weapon was a misunderstanding, apparently those gloves were meant to protect the Mjolnir from the weight of Thor’s swing. The reason for this is that Mjolnir with the orichalcum coating is on sleep mode, and on its awakened state Thor won’t be needing the use of the gloves to hold back.

For me the epic moment here in this volume is when Thor corrected himself when called Lu Bu, human. He called Lu Bu by his name showing that he sees the fighter in front of him as a worthy opponent, an equal if you must.

If you are doing a catch-up read and reading it volume by volume, this certainly left us on a cliffhanger.

And also the names of the contenders were now revealed!

To read the first volume of this manga, be sure to read from Chapter 001 – 004.

I hope that you enjoy the review! See you on the next one!
